MY FATHER, my sister and her husband returned from a vacation to Aguascalientes, Mexico. They were down there in Central Mexico for 5 days! Five days of 80 degrees Fahrenheit weather in the day and in the 50's at night!

They brought back some of my cousin Ofelia's Pan De Dios (Bread of God). It has oats, and nuts. It is more or less like a coffee cake. It is not very sweet. It is just sweet enough!

With a little coffee you have a great snack and sip!

JUST two days ago I was riding out in the countryside. I was with my mom. We had to utilize a transportation van for her doctor's appointment in Edinburg. We live in Mission.

Normally, I drive her to her appointments. This go-round I could not because my glasses were broken! Safety first!

Le Fleur Transportation Service provides rides for folks on medicare/medicaide! Excellent service.

Just remember they are not taxis! You must be very patient!

SO: we dropped off a client just before La Homa Road. I cannot remember the name of the road! The country bakery was near Emiliano Zapata school. I can't remember if it was an elementary school.

Google time!

The point is this: we love country bakeries because they retain their down-home nature and heart. It usually shows in their product!

MEXICAN/POLISH BAKERY

LUPE looked at his Mexican/Polish bakery and smiled. It was time for him to take a vacation. Funny how work seemed more a fun thing than actual TOIL.

His dad had been a baker and his father had been one too. It was in his blood. Mexico everywhere from the soft drinks to the calendars that adorned the small bakery. Poland was present too. Lupe's mom was from Poland. Pastries from both nations!

Now he Lupe was entrusting the family bakery to Stan his eldest son. Estanislado.

Would Stan stay in the family business or persue a law degree?

Lupe would wait and find out...there was always Guadalupe, Jr who at age 5 once announced that he would run the bakery once his mom and dad retired!

TRAVIS TREVINO waltzed into the Mexican panaderia with his new cowboy hat on. He wanted a dozen pieces of pan dulce. He scanned the area. The same tasty treats. Empanadas...molletes. Then he spied gold colored cookies! Wow!

He asked the counter lady about them. She smiled and told him they were called Villa's Gold as in Pancho Villas' gold. Almond gemmed cookies with cinnamon.

THERE it was loud as can be...a flourescent green sign in Kay Day's Serbian Bakery announcing a day of protest against Arizona's immigration law that its opponents say will lead to racism and racial profiling.

Kay was in the bakery talking to customers and assuring them that May 1 through May 5th proceeds of all sales would go to the Anti-Defamation League and MALDEF.

MIKE TOVAR sings Aloha everytime he thinks of Hawaii...his home sweet home. The young Hawaiian lives in Mcallen, Texas. He misses his favorite Hawaiian bakery.

ZANE CHANG was working at his father's Chinese bakery in Mexico when he heard of the Branch Davidian stand-off in Texas. He was also working in his papa's bakery when Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols bombed a federal building in Oklahoma City.

The young American aspiring pro-bowler was born in Mexico and had become a naturalized citizen.

He viewed both events as challenges for his new country and dedicated himself to doing something for law enforcement and military personnel.

What does Zane Chang do? Mr. Chang prays for his country's law enforcement and members of the armed services.

He prays against all terrorists.

POP BRISCOE'S MULTI-ETHNIC BAKERY

MARIA ran into the bakery and locked the door. She had more on her mind than just ordering Danish and Swedish cookies. She had just lost her stalker about 5 blocks away. Her cell phone was dead. She was a nervous wreck.

She glanced over at Pop Briscoe's counter. 1...2...3...4...5...customers sipping coffee and munching on Mexican pan dulce...sweet bread. Pop Briscoe on his laptop as was his custom at the 9:30 am to 10:30 am time frame. The middle aged man had discovered facebook and You Tube.

She caught his eye and informed him that she wanted the usual and some empanadas. Could she borrow the cell phone? Sure.

She called the police. The stalker was dumb enough to leave his business card...actually he dropped it by accident as he had come up to the door of her apartment. He thought she was not home and had wanted to sit by her door. Maria had slipped out the back door of her apartment. He heard her slam the door and ran to his car to persue.

THE stalker drove into the bakery parking lot when he saw her vehicle. Nuts! She had taken her boyfriend's DJ service van. Bad move. This psycho had memorized the license plates.

MARIA ran for the kitchen...into the arms of her boyfriend....a police officer who was a part-time baker for Pop Briscoe!

Back-up was 2 blocks away.....they were headed for the bakery for....doughnuts.....yep...doughnuts!

Take stalking seriously. Do not dismiss it as "nothing".

SALLY'S JAVA CAB RIDE

Sally sips on her coffee as her taxi slips past the big mall. A temple to insane consumerism. Nope. No thanks she thinks. She wants something REAL. Something that screams that it has a heart and soul! What goes good with java in the morning? A newspaper? Sure. A nice pastry.

Down the street she whispers to her cab driver...further down into the dark lit district of the city where the old ladies still speak the Mother Tongue. There by the cardboard house for the toothfairy necklace homeless craftsman...there it is....the Serbian bakery!

That will fill her bill and get her jets fired up before she heads uptown to the long tall glass building where she toils as a robotic spirit...paper shuffling and filing and making copies. A worker bee in a behive of monotony.

Ah, but the Serbian bakery brings her back to her roots to her truth. A connection. A companion
for her black dark coffee. A nice tip for the cabbie.
